Effortless Autumn Entertaining: How to Host in London Without the Stress

Autumn dinner party catering delivered in London

There's a special pleasure in entertaining in autumn. The evenings draw in, the food becomes richer and more comforting, and a table full of friends feels like exactly the right way to spend a Saturday. The only thing standing between most of us and a beautiful dinner party is the work — the planning, the shopping, the day lost in the kitchen, the washing-up no one wants to do.

It doesn't have to be that way. Here's how to be the calmest person at your own party.

Decide on the format first.

Before anything else, picture the evening. Are people standing with a glass in hand, mingling? Then canapés are your friend. Sitting down for something generous and relaxed? A buffet lets everyone help themselves. Want an occasion — candles, courses, a proper table? That's a private dinner. Choosing the format first makes every other decision easier.

Let someone else do the cooking.

This is the part most hosts get wrong: they try to do everything themselves and spend the whole evening in the kitchen instead of with their guests. The simplest fix is drop-off catering. Everything is cooked by hand and delivered to your door, beautifully presented, with simple heating instructions where needed. You don't need a kitchen full of staff or a chef in the house — you need to open the door, set it out, and pour the wine.

Plan your quantities (or let us)

The most common worry is running out of food, swiftly followed by buying far too much. For canapés before a meal, plan three to five per person; for a longer reception, plan eight to ten per person. If you'd rather not do the maths, we work out the right amount based on your guest list — it's part of the service. (Our

 covers this in detail.)

Keep the rest simple.

Good food does the heavy lifting, so everything else can be easy. A couple of well-chosen wines, some candles, a playlist you actually like — that's a beautiful evening. Resist the urge to over-plan; relaxed hosts make for relaxed parties.

Book a little earlier than you think.

Autumn weekends fill up quickly, and the run-up to Christmas even more so. If there's a date in mind, it's worth getting in touch sooner rather than later — partly to secure it, partly so we can plan something lovely rather than something rushed.

Entertaining should feel like a treat, for you as much as for your guests. Hand over the food, and the rest takes care of itself.
